Reflection and Resilience: Embracing the December Blues and Celebrating Growth in 2024

As we approach the end of 2024, we’d like to share some of our achievements and milestones as well as raise awareness of the ”December Blues”. This year has been a journey of growth – From the trust our clients have placed in
us and the strong partnerships we’ve built along the way, we have received recognition and expanded our team along the way.

Championing the next generation of therapists

One of our most significant achievements has been our work with student counsellors, helping them gain the hands-on experience they need to become fully qualified psychotherapists. We’ve been fortunate enough to provide a space for these future professionals to grow, learn, and connect with clients. By mentoring and supporting our student counsellors, we’re investing in the future of mental health care.

Becoming a BACP-Recognised organisation

This year, we received recognition from the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). This milestone reflects our commitment to ethical and high-quality care and gives our clients the confidence that our therapists meet the highest standards in counselling and psychotherapy.

Expanding mental health at work partnerships

Workplace mental health is a growing topic, and we want to ensure we are at the forefront of support in our community. Our partnership with Mental Health at Work allows us to support organisations in creating environments where mental health and wellbeing are prioritised. By delivering mental health resources directly into workplaces, we’re helping to normalise conversations around mental health and create spaces where employees feel supported.

Joining the Employee Assistance Professionals Association (EAPA)

We became a member of the Employee Assistance Professionals Association (EAPA), joining a network dedicated to employee mental health. Through this partnership, we offer tailored support to corporate clients, promoting mental
wellness and providing tools to manage the unique stresses of professional life. This is another step toward supporting our wider community as a whole.

Partnering with Barnardo’s Mumma’s Project

We also proudly became part of the Mumma Project, launched by Barnardo’s in partnership with the Raham Project and CPSL Mind, to provide tailored support for Black, Asian, and Mixed-ethnicity mothers and parents of young children in our community. MUMMA addresses critical gaps in culturally sensitive antenatal and mental health care, offering services such as breastfeeding support, antenatal classes, mental health counselling, and community connection. Statistics reveal that Black women in our local area face significantly higher risks in childbirth, with rates of preterm births and maternal mortality notably higher. Through MUMMA, these mothers now receive the personalised care they need, developing healthier families and communities.

The December Blues

This time of year can bring with it a wide range of emotions. For many, it’s a time of coming together and celebrating, but for some, it can also stir up feelings of sadness, loneliness and stress – often called the “December Blues.” We recognise how challenging this time of year can be, and we are here to offer support and hope to those in need. Christmas isn’t always filled with joy and celebration. For many, it’s a time of reflection and sometimes loneliness, especially if they’re coping with grief or other challenges. Here’s a look at why the December Blues happen and how you can find ways to ease the impact.

Recognising the impact of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

The shorter days mean less sunlight, which can contribute to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). This form of depression often brings feelings of fatigue, low mood, and a lack of motivation. That’s why you find it harder to get up in the mornings and stay motivated throughout the day. While it can be challenging to manage, even small changes – like going outside during daylight hours, staying physically active, or seeking therapy – can make a difference.

Setting boundaries to reduce stress

December often comes with a whirlwind of social events and family gatherings, which can be overwhelming on top of the December Blues. It’s okay to say “no” when you need to. Honouring your limits by setting boundaries and making time for self-care can help you avoid burnout. Remember, prioritising your wellbeing
isn’t selfish – it’s essential.
